If you have any interest in footwear trends, by now you are greatly aware of the shoe of the season: the gladiator sandal. The varieties are endless from flat to heeled, ankle to knee, embellished to metallic. I am currently fascinated by the authentic Roman version: the flat sandal with buckles up to the knee.
Deeply rooted in history, the gladiator sandal was originally fashioned to be comfortable, flexible, and provide great support as men fought to kill for the crowd's enjoyment. We may not be sparring to the death in the Colosseum, but gladiator sandals are as fierce and edgy as ever and will definitely add a hint of danger to your summer ensembles. Like their predecessors of centuries past, they remain unbelievably comfortable which makes them pretty practical in my book.
While I love the look on models and waif-like Olsen-types, I'm still not sure how I feel about the style on my 5'2" pregnant frame. I will test-drive it and get back to you in a future outfit post...provided that my foot and ankle swelling stays in check. The question remains: who or what will I spar?
Arguably, the most popular version of the gladiator sandal comes from Stuart Weitzman and for good reason...they are equally fierce and comfortable. With elastic straps to the knee and a perfectly supported sole, Weitzman's genius design fits every calf and will keep your feet happy all day. Previously only seen in black, now Stuart Weitzman and Neiman Marcus have come together to offer a collection of custom-designed gladiators in a wide variety of colors (including leopard!).
